El Salto, Ensenada | First time in our SUV-Camper

Many of you might recall our adorable smurf car, that we owned for a good while and had some awesome camping adventures with.

It was really cute and very uncomfortable to sleep in, but we appreciated it. It has seen some places and it deserves to be remembered. However, children grow, dogs want to be included and there are only so many nights you can take in a tiny blue can before going mental. It was time for a change.

We've had this car for about 6 months now and it has already seen some epic adventures. This is a post about its first - El Salto near Ensenada, Mexico. Enjoy.
Baja California is full of awesome places for camping. I will be talking about some of them in the following weeks, but today we're only 360 km south of the border.

I wouldn't call it anything other than a ranch. They've got some bathrooms (no toilet paper or soap though), a tiny store, some grills and tables if that's your thing, hiking trails and a lot of great places for camping.
90 MXN per person. The child and the dog were free of charge.
Rule №1 of camping with children: pee before you do anything.

Also, bring your puppy whenever you can. It's 10 times more fun.

Almost immediately upon arrival, we went hiking.

It's nice to stretch your legs after a drive, but also crucial when you have kids and/or dogs with you because you know as well as I do that all that excitement and energy needs to go somewhere.

Bringing a dog along is more challenging in a way, but has some perks that can't be ignored.

First of all, they help with kids. Well, I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience, that's the case. We have a 'pitbull-shepherd-many other dogs' mix that we rescued in Guadalajara when she was about 3-4 months old. She is well-trained and super polite. Our daughter adores her, so during walks often starts following Zoey. You call the dog and she brings the kid with her.

Another very important thing is that they are much more sensitive to the environment. I doubt our dog would attack someone, but she would let us know in advance that an animal or a human is approaching. Personally, I think it's comforting.

A little break with some lunch along the way, which I would never stop recommending.

Eating outside is so much fun! Even the simplest meal of boiled eggs, vegetables and apples becomes something special when eaten on the ground.

Don't forget to care for your doggie. And please don't ever leave trash after yourself. Let's all be cool and dispose of it the proper way.

Nothing like a long hike to spark the appetite.

By the way, if you are curious about the logistics of our car, stay tuned because there will be a separate post about that.

So we ate... and then I insisted we go climb that tree that I had my eye on since we got there. When I was a kid, back in Russia, my friends and I used to climb trees non-stop during the summer. And any kid who's into that knows that trees are not created equal so once you see a perfectly climbable one, you can't just let it go.

It brings me great pain to say that my daughter hates it. She did get there willingly but regretted it pretty soon. She then proceeded to abandon me and migrate to the safety of daddy's arms.

It's all right. We'll work on that.

The next day we got up and barely finished breakfast before going to search for the source of awesome pictures. You know, the ones that show up when you Google 'El Salto'.

Does anyone else enjoy taking pictures of bugs and snakes? Encountering an animal is awesome, yes, but insects, large spiders and snakes get me so childishly excited, I just can't help it. Maybe because you can get much closer to them than you would dare with a bigger creature. Or because they are so peculiar in their form and strength.

Zoey was having a blast.

When the path started getting more rocky, we knew we were close.

Not gonna lie, doing this kind of hiking is a bit challenging with a kid. The dog loved it though.

We went as far as we could, but the last bit of the way requires climbing gear and definitely isn't appropriate for a 2-year old.

Somewhere on the bottom of this canyon, there is a body of water that looks amazing on pictures. You will stumble upon it if you Google the place.

There were a couple of dozens of people and almost all of them stopped where we did. Only a few teams of climbers proceeded further. But we were happy with what we've seen and soon turned around.

That was the end of our adventure. We got some sun, some exercise, tried the car out and got away from the city's routine.

You can judge the success of our trip by the state of these guys.

And then, as always, we stuffed ourselves with pizza - that's our little tradition.
